Exam essentials· Practical guide

Using AI for your SBA? Keep your thinking visible.

Understand CXC’s published AI guidance, keep a record of your process, and talk to your teacher before you submit.

What CXC said about AI and authorship

CXC’s 11 May 2026 statement describes AI as a possible support for understanding concepts, exploring ideas and suggesting structure. It also says students must acknowledge AI use and supply a Disclosure Form and Originality Report where AI has been used. Work generated wholly or significantly by AI is treated as academic dishonesty. The statement says AI detection alone will not determine a judgement about a student’s work.

This guide is for students whose confirmed assessment route still includes an SBA. CXC subsequently announced assessment reforms in July. Check your own subject and cohort with your school, and use the latest instructions when preparing a submission.

Agree on the boundaries before you begin

Bring a concrete example to your teacher: “Can I use a tool to explain this term?” is easier to resolve than “Can I use AI?” Ask what you need to record and how to complete the required documents. A tool’s ability to produce a polished paragraph does not establish that you are permitted to submit it.

Keep a small process folder

Make your own working process easy to revisit. This is a practical organisational suggestion, not a replacement for the official forms. Keep your research, notes and drafts together as you go, rather than trying to reconstruct them the night before submission.

  • Save dated drafts and the feedback you received on them.
  • Record any AI tool used, the task you used it for and what you did with the response.
  • Check factual claims against real sources you have actually read.
  • Be ready to explain your choices, calculations and conclusions in your own words.

Use the final review to find gaps

Read your work slowly and ask: could I explain this paragraph without looking at it? Which source supports this claim? Does the conclusion follow from the evidence I collected? If an answer is unclear, revise the work or ask for guidance.
