How to support your CSEC student at home
You don’t need to know the syllabus to help. A routine, encouragement and the right questions go a long way.
Agree on a routine together
Sit down with your child and look at their real week: school, travel, chores and rest. Agree on a few short study sessions that fit around them. A routine they helped plan is one they are more likely to keep.
Ask about the process, not only the marks
Questions like “What did you practise today?” or “What was tricky?” invite a real answer. They also show that steady effort matters, not only the final grade.
Make a calm place to work
A clear table, a phone left in another room and a set start time help more than long hours. Short, focused sessions with a break in between are easier to keep up.
Know the dates and plan backwards
Find out when your child sits each paper. Count the weeks back from the first one and help them spread revision across those weeks, so the final month is for review rather than catching up. Your child’s school or national examinations office can confirm the timetable.
Talk to teachers early
If the same topic keeps causing trouble, a short conversation with the subject teacher can save weeks of frustration. Teachers can point to the parts of the syllabus that matter most.
